Fashion Awards 2017: The Nominees

Life&Style writer Rebecca Moran takes a look at this year's nominees for the Fashion Awards

The nominations for ‘the Oscars of the fashion industry’: the 2017 Fashion Awards, have been announced, ahead of the 4th December ceremony. The annual event held by the British Fashion Council celebrates excellence within the global fashion industry. With categories ranging from ‘Urban Luxe Award’ to Model of the Year, the guestlist brings together the years’ most exciting designers, brands, business leaders, influencers and creatives as well as the industry’s biggest stars. The event is also open to the public, with tickets from £50.

The Awards are the primary fundraiser for the British Fashion Council’s Education Foundation, a charity which aims to attract and support new talent into the industry. The foundation offers both undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships as well as fashion apprenticeships and a programme of industry-led events, seminars and competitions. The raison d’etre of the event is to secure the future generation of fashion talent while celebrating the outstanding contributions of current industry leaders.

Nominees and winners for The Fashion Awards 2017 will be voted on by an international judging panel, made up of over 2,000 key industry figures from all corners of the fashion industry. This years’ nominations see designer Jonathan Anderson emerge on top with four nominations for his work at both Loewe and his eponymous label J.W.Anderson. In 2015, the acclaimed Brit designer was the first ever to win the coveted awards for both Menswear and Womenswear Designer of the Year. Following another successful year, including a sell-out collaboration with Uniqlo, it seems that his accomplishments will continue. Rihanna makes an appearance in the shortlist for her label Fenty Puma, which is nominated for Urban Luxury Brand, up against cult streetwear brands Supreme, Off-White, Vetements and Gosha Rubchinskiy. This award celebrates the way ‘sportswear’ has been redefined across the globe, elevating ‘casual’ to high end and directional fashion. For the second time, Bella Hadid goes head-to-head with her sister Gigi Hadid for the title of Model of the Year, also up against Adwoa Aboah, Winnie Harlow and breakout runway star of the spring/summer 2018 shows, Kaia Gerber.

Additional awards will be celebrated on the night, recognising remarkable career milestones for individuals. The recipients of these special awards will be announced in November.
