When HRVY bounded onstage at the O2 Academy in Birmingham, it was clear from the offset that this was going to be a set full of dancing, good vibes, and upbeat bangers.

HRVY began his set with ‘Good Vibes,’ ‘1 Day 2 Nights,’ ‘Told You So,’ and ‘Hasta Luego.’ The latter proved a firm crowd favourite, and despite the absence of the song’s co-collaborator, Malu Trevejo, HRVY delivered an energetic performance. You definitely could not tell that anything was missing from the original song, helped in part by HRVY’s flawless vocals which grabbed the audience’s attention from the get go.

HRVY was joined on stage by four backing dancers who added another dimension to the performance. While the choreography was at times somewhat stilted, the dancers made up for it with their energy and hit every move with intensity. HRVY joined in with the dancing at certain points throughout his performance, to cheers from an impressed crowd, and showed that his time on Strictly Come Dancing really did pay off. His swagger whilst dancing was reminiscent of a young Justin Bieber, and I would have liked to see more dancing from HRVY throughout the concert.

I was intrigued to see how some of his songs (particularly ‘Younger,’ an electro pop single with Jonas Blue) would work live with a more stripped back sound, but HRVY adapted well and this simpler backing track allowed his vocals to shine through.

The mood was mellowed down during the middle of the set list when HRVY slowed the tempo with a cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Driver’s License,’ followed by Harry Styles’ ‘Falling.’ Although a big song, HRVY nailed the vocals of ‘Falling,’ and delivered a magnificent performance which hit all the right notes emotionally. His choice to cover a slightly less well-known tune from Styles was effective and provided the audience with a break from dancing to his more upbeat performances. HRVY’s decision to sing ‘Driver’s License’ highlighted his understanding of his audience demographic, who were ecstatic to see their favourite artist cover one of the most famous and poignant songs of the year.

These small moments clearly made a large impact on fans

In between songs HRVY interacted with the crowd, discussing his time on Strictly Come Dancing and asking fans for tattoo ideas. He asked the audience to scream whilst he recorded it, wanting to turn the audience’s cheers into a sound wave tattoo to remember this tour. These small moments clearly made a large impact on fans, who were over the moon at the thought of connecting with their idol in this way.

HRVY finished off with his most popular single ‘Personal,’ and the relatively short (3m 18s) song was transformed into the ultimate show stopper, being extended to include dance breaks, instrumentals and heavy beats fans were going crazy for. This was the perfect song to end the concert with and left the audience on a high note. HRVY’s energy on stage during this song rendered it clear that this tune is a real crowd pleaser and perhaps his favourite to perform.

Overall, HRVY delivered a fun and upbeat performance which excited the audience and had everybody, including the plethora of parents dragged along by enthusiastic pre-teens, on their feet for song after song.
