Album Review: First Aid Kit – Ruins
First Aid Kit's comeback record emphasises beauty and texture to great effect, says Meg Whitehouse in her 5 Star review
It’s been just over a week since the Söderberg sisters released their fourth effort, the beautifully penned, hauntingly sung masterpiece, Ruins. We’ve been waiting four years since their last album, Stay Gold, and I can honestly say it was worth the wait. Klara and Johanna have not let us down, Ruins is beautiful from start to finish.
“The album opens with the bold ‘Rebel Heart’ that aches of painful desperation but rings with a haunting beauty
‘Fireworks’ is a slow building wistful ballad; the repeated line ‘why do I do this to myself?’ rings with a pain that I think everyone struggling with friendships, love and life in general can relate to. The hidden gem of this album, and my personal favourite is the ethereal masterpiece ‘My Wild Sweet Love’. The campfire vocals of Johanna and Klara collide magnificently and are lifted by the beautiful but gentle production on the song. It explores the pain and joy that comes with a fleeting love, ‘we’re a hazy memory with all the colours of a dream’ sums up perfectly those feelings of excitement that fade to a dull ache after the loss of a passing relationship.
“Johanna and Klara Söderberg have the undeniable knack of pairing heartbreakingly painful lyrics that will ring true with almost everyone at some point in their life
First Aid Kit’s Johanna and Klara Söderberg have the undeniable knack of pairing heartbreakingly painful lyrics that will ring true with almost everyone at some point in their life, with upbeat melodies that elevate the heartfelt words of the songs whist remaining poignant. Their songs are timeless and I can say with certainty I will be listening to them for many years to come.
