Single Review: George the Poet and Maverick Sabre ft. Jorja Smith – Follow the Leader
Kieren Williams checks out the fantastic new collaboration between George the Poet and Maverick Sabre, an inspiring effort featuring vocals from Jorja Smith
‘Follow the Leader’ by George the Poet and Maverick Sabre, featuring Jorja Smith, is an emotional and honest song about doing exactly the opposite of that – of not following the leader. The three rising stars team up perfectly on this song. George the Poet’s smooth flow glides over the beat with brutally honest lyrics, ‘I love my mum but I don’t want to see her right now / cos she’s gonna take one look at me and worry about my lifestyle’. You can hear the pleading emotion in his voice as he talks about the struggles of trying to make it, the hardships of going alone and carving your own path in life.
“The angelic voice of Jorja Smith mixes perfectly with her long-time collaborator Maverick Sabre – just as angelic in his own right
Maverick Sabre comes in on the bridge, and expands on the ideas of the hook, of finding your own way to the sun regardless of what others say. It wouldn’t surprise me if this song doesn’t penetrate particularly high up the charts, but I don’t think anyone thinks of the charts as the be-all and end-all judge of good music – not by a long stretch of the imagination. My only critique of the song is the artwork, it’s a tad boring, the title emblazoned on a black and blue background (Not all artwork can be as good as Man on the Moon II though). They end the song on the chorus again, the duo beautifully harmonising about the need to stand up for yourself, to lead your own life and do right by you. And it acts as the perfect ending to this impressive song.
