Hustings at Better Guild Forum
The attendees at Monday night’s better guild forum heavily consisted of candidates for the various positions that were featured, spottable immediately by the colourful costumes
Many of them were there simply to give their speeches and left soon after to carry on the campaign efforts, with whisperings of planned door knockings.
Led by current VPW Luke and VPDR Hugo, the discussion was focused on policies as each candidate was given a timed slot to make a speech and then faced their audience for questions. That is all but the VPHC candidates, who were spared questioning after the absence of one of the candidates meant that chair Hugo didn't see it right to infringe the absentee's right to respond.
What was most obvious was the overlap between policies, not just among candidates vying for the same position but also those from different positions. Support for the Reclaim the Guild movement was raised not only by the VPDR candidates but also the Community Action Officer candidate. There was also much talk of plans to make Selly Oak safer and to increase water facilities around campus.
But beyond the overall structure and niceties, there were still points of clash, as the two present VPHC candidates argued over the current status of the 'I love Selly Oak’ programme, which one of the candidates proposed a relaunch of.
Mid-week club night
And spurred on indeed by one of the VPHC candidates, the VPDR candidates disagreed over the feasibility of another mid week club night, with talks of community disruption, noise complaints and litter and alternative suggestions of an open-mic night.
