Week 1 Campaigning Summary – Vice President Activities and Development

All the VP Activities and Development candidates have been out on campus campaigning this week and spoke about their policies at the hustings on Tuesday. The VPAD is responsible for supporting student groups represents the interests of student committees. They also liaise with groups such as the Careers and Employability Centre to enhance personal development.
His campaign has taken him throughout the campus, university accommodation and Selly Oak. When asked, Ollie said that he was greatly enjoying the campaign, saying that ‘Getting the message out there is the best part of campaigning and seeing what they [students] want and as much as you can give them.’
Ollie has stated that his main policies are formulated around launching a SocietiesFest, refreshing guild volunteering, better funding for groups and creating a 24/7 accessible officer. Finally, social media has been very much incorporated into Ollie’s campaign, he has an online tracker which pinpoints his location on campus, Twitter and Facebook pages and a website where his policies are outlined.

Chris has premised his mandate upon establishing better support for student group committee members, better promoting the activities and achievements of student groups, improving the guild website and improving student group membership. Chris has been actively campaigning around campus and visiting students in their respective accommodation.
Since Monday, when campaigning began, Chris said that he was very much enjoying the campaign, and that ‘We got talking to a lot of people, we got a lot of good feedback and we got a lot of people enjoying the campaign; enjoying the gimmick’. Equally, Chris has greatly utilised social media to great effect, using Twitter and uploading a campaign video to his website and Facebook.

Anna 'the Polar Bear' Kaisa Polojärvi
Anna-Kaisa Polojärvi, a 3rd year International Relations student, is the third candidate running for VPAD. Despite an early setback on the Monday due to illness she has also been campaigning throughout the campus and within halls of residence.
Anna said that she was greatly enjoying the campaigning, saying that ‘the responses I got from the people were really inspiring’ and it ‘feels good to be actually talking to voters and hear what they have to say’. Anna has adopted a polar bear theme, and has based her policies around better representation for students at the Guild of Students, increased Guild publicity on campus, greater democracy within groups and less university control over student groups.
Anna has also used social media effectively, and has a Twitter and Facebook page and website in order to circulate her policies and activities.
