Charlotte Goodwin looks ahead to this series of the top modelling competition.
The new series of Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model is certainly going to be an explosive one. Executive Producer and presenter of the show, Elle Macpherson, has used her power to makeover last year’s judging panel. Out goes model Charley Speed and controversial stylist Grace Woodward, and in their places we have two Americans; supermodel Tyson Beckford and fashion designer Whitney Port. Elle’s right-hand-man Julien MacDonald remains on her side to offer his straight talking, if at times rude, thoughts. In one series he said, ‘you look like a girl who should be eating a Cornish pasty.’ He himself has undergone a transformation after advice from Elle to lose weight for series eight. At least he always provides entertainment and honesty!
This series has promised to ‘test the girls like never before’ in order to find ‘a young, fresh and beautiful girl’ to win a modelling contract, front a Miss Selfridge campaign and a Cover page and fashion shoot with Company magazine.
20 girls were selected to perform a catwalk show in London in front of Elle to persuade her why they deserve to win the show. Obviously there were some girls who knew how to combine their confidence and walking ability to impress Elle, while some just seemed awkward and made viewers agree with Julien’s view that some of the girls are not so brilliant this series. After the catwalk it was announced by Elle that all the girls were making it through to the next challenge: A trip to Dubai! However, the pressure proved to be too much by this point as one girl chose to leave the competition early.
Dubai not only welcomed the girls to the two new fresh-faced American judges, but the contestants did not waste time saying their true thoughts about the other girls and the bitchiness began even before the first Dubai photo-shoot!
After a day of relaxation in the Dubai sun Tyler and Whitney were given the responsibility of mentoring the girls on their first swimwear shoot. The shoot proved that some girls took to the camera naturally, while others left Whitney to comment some are ‘faking having an idea’. Again the pressure of the shoot made another girl choose to the leave the show.
At the end of the first episode Elle eliminated just one girl, leaving 17 to battle for one of the 14 places in the Model House after the Dubai trip. This series definitely looks set to contain lots more drama and explosive fireworks to keep us hooked all summer.
