After his initial runaway success as the ‘ultimate Chelsea playboy’ on E4’s reality drama Made in Chelsea, it looks like Spencer Matthews is not finished with reality television as he becomes the new beau for Channel Five’s second series of The Bachelor. Following on from previous series’ rugby star Gavin Henson, Spenser is thrown together with 24 “bachelorettes”, and over the weeks has to whittle it down to find that one special lady.
It was always going to be intriguing seeing Spenser outside his usual group of Chelsea socialites- and then of course, there’s the question of his on-off relationship with MIC co-star Louise Thompson. Surprisingly, what we’re presented with is not our familiarly devilish cool cat, but a genuine guy looking for an ‘intimate, loving, and long-lasting relationship.’ Well, that’s what he claims . The girls definitely seem taken by him, and he immediately fends off inquiries about Louise saying that he wouldn’t be there if he were in a relationship.
The first episode consists of a sort of meet-and-greet party in a villa on the French Riviera (naturally), and then individual two-minute meetings with each girl to ascertain something about their personalities. He then has to give out roses to the two girls who impressed him the most, before the ultimate “judgement” where he knocks out nine of the women. The female line-up consists of the predictable categories for this type of TV- ‘vulnerable’ doe-eyes, ‘man eater’, ‘intelligent’ but needs to loosen up a bit, ‘down-to-earth’, ‘glamorous’, and generally catty. The conversation is wearing at best, and coupled with a commentator that without a hint of sarcasm can dole out lines like “The rain may have started to fall, but in Sophia’s heart, the sun always shines around Spenser” it may not be a show for everyone, but for some light-hearted fun, and rather hot outfits, it’s definitely worth a watch.
