Gaming Writer Tilly Hollyhead discusses the impact of Undertale and its recent ten-year anniversary celebration stream
Released in September 2015, Undertale is a multiple-choice roleplaying game developed by Toby Fox. The story follows a human child who falls into an underground civilization filled with monsters. The king of the underground, Asgore, wishes to acquire the child’s soul to return to the surface and free monsterkind. Despite its humble beginnings, Undertale was an undeniable success — as of 2025, the game has sold over five million copies.
Some humorous antics on camera
Fox appears as a pillow resembling Undertale‘s ‘Annoying Dog’ character, communicating via text-to-speech. He is also accompanied by some more human hosts that engage in some humorous antics on camera: Reid Young, Dan Moore, and Charlie Verdin, who sport the collective nickname ‘Fangamer Dads’.
The first livestream starts strongly with an update to the game’s tutorial area, the Ruins. An abandoned city is displayed alongside a statue of Toriel and a series of books that the player cannot read.
There are also new areas to explore in two other regions within the game: Snowdin and Hotland. A new monster called Lumberjack now occupies Snowdin’s forest; the player can motivate and speak to him about his job.
Hotland, on the other hand, is much more absurd. In a parody of Japanese romance anime, the player enters a school where they and Mettaton are its newest students. There is seemingly a romance blooming between them, but Mettaton attempts to blow up the player and fails just as it is time for him to confess his feelings under a flaming tree.
Additionally, the hosts try multiple times to fight Sans, who usually only attacks the player during the game’s Genocide route. They are entirely unsuccessful, with Sans fleeing the scene upon their final attempt before any attacks could begin.
The second livestream continues this endeavour, however Sans initiates combat only to push the player out before the fight finishes. However, by the final attempt, Sans offers the player a hug and opts to break the fourth wall. He specifically commends the player’s charity, as the stream itself is a charity event for Doctors Without Borders.

Undertale’s tenth anniversary struck more than just the hearts of fans
Undertale’s tenth anniversary struck more than just the hearts of fans. Exclusive merchandise items were auctioned off as an incentive for viewers to donate towards the charity. By the end of the celebrations, the community raised $361,407.76 for Doctors Without Borders; a testament to their strength.
There were many other interesting moments, including a remix of the ‘Hotel’ song that plays in the MTT Resort, and new animations in the Omega Flowey fight. However, Fox’s true message to the fans appeared towards the ending of the game.
Giving more focus to beloved characters
The final boss, Asriel, acknowledged that ten years have passed, and lamented that he will be alone after this fight. The new content reflected this, giving more focus to beloved characters with new animated sprites and a nuzzling contest cameo.
Once the credits reached their conclusion, Fox concluded with a final statement reflecting the various interpretations of the stream: “The underground is as big as you want it to be, and I invite you to come behind the wall with me.”
