Your Party was founded in 2025 by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, with the aim of forming a new democratic movement that serves the people.  However, these core values have been overshadowed by a harsh power struggle between Corbyn and Sultana which may have fatal ramifications for their party’s success.

A recent spark in this rivalry has surfaced due to upcoming elections for the party’s Central Executive Committee.  This Committee will be the driving force behind the party, because of their collective leadership model, which gives control of the party to ordinary members rather than a single leader.  This reflects Corbyn’s commitment to open democracy.

This has created a climate of mistrust between the two founders which has only been further perpetuated throughout the emergence of the party

This structural feature sought to avoid battles within the party for the top job. However, rivalries are now being carried out indirectly as Corbyn and Sultana back different candidates for the committee in a bid for influence.

This has created a climate of mistrust between the two founders which has only been further perpetuated throughout the emergence of the party.  For example, the alternative visions for the party held by the two founders have only become clearer over time.  Sultana advocates for grassroots, member-led democracy and accuses Corbyn of centralising power to the extent that it mirrored a “Labour right”.  Whereas, Corbyn advocates for a party that reflects a broad spectrum of left politics to achieve mass support.

These different views were realised at Your Party’s inaugural conference in Liverpool, where Sultana boycotted the first day over what she perceived to be unjust expulsions of members belonging to the Socialist Workers Party.  This links to Sultana’s view that the party should follow a maximum member democracy model, where the party is led by grassroot members rather than following a top-down leadership model.

Stark differences between the two leaders have led to factionalism and infighting within the party, causing detrimental impacts for the wider party

These expulsions went against what Sultana believed to be the foundational values of Your Party.  However, her actions were perceived by some as an attempt to gain the support of the ultra-left which consequently alienated prospective supporters, who instead are turning to the Greens.

Furthermore, in mid-September a dispute emerged over an email sent out to all members concerning a membership portal, set up by Sultana, where visitors could “sign up for either a regular or concessionary membership for £55 or £25 a year”.  This membership portal collected substantial data and £800 000 in donations and levies.  However, soon after, Corbyn released a message stating this was unauthorised and called for any direct debits to be cancelled.  This sparked Sultana to respond claiming she was acting out of frustration over being sidelined by a “sexist boys club”.

Stark differences between the two leaders have led to factionalism and infighting within the party, causing detrimental impacts for the wider party.  For example, two independent MPs, Adnan Hussain and Iqbal Mohamed both left the party due to this internal fighting and claims of a toxic culture.

Polls indicate that the proportion of Britons who would consider voting for Your Party has dropped to 12% in late 2025 from 18%

This has severe implications for the Party’s political influence since this reduces the party’s credibility and undermines its appeal.  This restricts the party’s influence in the political arena, thereby reducing the extent to which the party will be able to achieve its goals.

So, what can be said for the future of Your Party?  Polls indicate that the proportion of Britons who would consider voting for Your Party has dropped to 12% in late 2025 from 18%.   This indicated that while the party continues to have solid foundational values as a socialist, member led party, without a clear organisational and leadership structure this underlying sentiment can only carry the party so far.
