Being a fresher at uni is an extremely unique experience! Coming from the perspective of an international student who’s just finished first year, there are many intimidating factors, not knowing anyone in this new city and country, and for some of you like me, it might even be an entirely new continent. There is so much to explore, friends to make, cultural shocks to bear, introductions to remember, and the reason you’re here – your course to study. My favourite part of settling in was exploring all the shops in Selly Oak and going in to the different supermarkets, I found and ate so many snacks I used to see on YouTube as a kid from Taste the Orient.

Redbrick is an excellent way to meet new people from all the different subjects and years in a creative environment, as well as a great way to start getting involved and putting yourself out there! The Film & TV section is brand new this year, having come through merging the previously separate Film and TV sections. While we will miss both sections having their own space in the paper, this expands the horizons of the section and gives you a chance to write, review, and compare film and TV together.
In the spirit of the section, and the beginning of your Uni life, I have compiled a list of some films and shows that would fit the theme!
- The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003): It is rumoured that the Eye of Sauron was inspired by Old Joe.
- Peaky Blinders (2013-2022): A classic show based on a real street gang that operated in Birmingham.
- The Breakfast Club (1985): It might be old, but the timelessness of the themes of bonding and social labels make it for a great watch for new students.
- Queen (2013): An underrated Bollywood masterpiece, about leaving your comfort zone and stepping into a new country all alone.
- Ronny Chieng: International Student (2017): A very interesting comedy series set in Australia, the title gives away the plot.
This is all, the year will go by so much quicker than you would expect it, hopefully with great memories and more confidence! Welcome to the next few years of your life!
