Life&Style Editor Eleanor Scott shares the lessons she’s learnt from her first two years at university.
Uni is good for character growth, it is cringey but true. The life-defining experience of moving away from home and living independently is bound to accelerate your character development… as well as your sense of style.
In my first two years of university, my sense of style has definitely improved – my confidence has also! It’s often as simple as just finding that one clothing item that makes you feel more like yourself. For example, my Hollister low-rise baggy jeans are basically my campus comfort blanket.

The main piece of style advice anyone should have is to wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident. When outfit indecision hits, my go-to outfit for campus is baggy jeans, a baby tee, and a Stussy fleece. As a Stussy fanatic, this is a combo I never grow tired of. Comfort as a student is essential, and I basically treat my hoodies and coat like that one toy a child won’t let go of. On an equally important note, baggy joggers are essential, like for the library or downtime in your flat/house. Wearing what makes you feel confident, can often come down to colour; for me, that’s dark winter shades. What is it for you?

The best life lesson at uni is to be yourself; it has never been so true. I’m sure you will learn, as I have, through some trial and error, to surround yourself with people who make you feel like you can be yourself. This is true for friendships and relationships. Also, wearing what makes you feel like yourself can help you feel more confident in meeting new people. Confidence is all about practice. No one feels confident all the time, so stop replaying that one conversation you thought you fumbled. It is easy to get into your own head at uni and have unrealistically ambitious expectations for yourself.

Trying new things outside your comfort zone is important, but so is knowing when to protect your own peace and not burn out. After all, let’s not forget we are also here to work lol. I am guilty of one too many sports nights in a row, but that’s ok because I will be locking in this year for my final year! Everything is better, really, in moderation. That does sound boring, but it is so true to protecting your peace and energy at uni! Especially when it comes to drinking, most people will have a story of when they accidentally overdid it, including me, and it happens! But alcohol can also be dangerous, so look out for yourselves and friends! Fuelling yourself well with carbs beforehand is so important. My personal go-to is a frozen microwavable jacket potato and beans.

Finally, my go-to outfit of choice for a night out is the standard jeans and a nice top, sometimes a denim mini skirt and boots if I’m feeling a bit more fancy. And please, take a jacket, braving November nights in just a top is not for the weak. Thanks for reading, and I wish you luck with your uni life, style, and character development era!
