Music Critic Jasmine Davies reviews Lana Del Rey’s latest single, ‘Henry, come on’
Put your cowboy hats on – Lana Del Rey is back! A new era is beginning, and this time she is diving into the country genre. On April 11, Rey offered a taste of what’s to come from her upcoming album, The Right Person Will Stay, with the first single, ‘Henry, come on’.
The single is five minutes and eleven seconds of pure bliss. On first listen, you may find it somewhat boring (I’m ashamed to admit that’s what I thought about her iconic hit ‘Margaret’ until I listened to it a couple of times, and it just clicked). ‘Henry, come on’ is not the kind of song you dance to. You listen to it when lying in bed and staring at the ceiling. You let each beautiful, yet melancholic, lyric float over you.

The lyrics feel simple and sincere, like a spring day. Rey also shows a sense of vulnerability throughout. The lyric, ‘But yesterday, I heard God say, “You were born to be the one / To hold the hand of the man / Who flies too close to the sun”’ is almost like a confession from Rey. The imagery of Icarus highlights how she is often drawn to self-destructive men.
It seems the song might be based on a past relationship. Fans speculated that this album would feature many songs about her now-husband (and alligator tour guide) Jeremy Dufrene. Whilst there does not seem to be any reference to him in this song, we still have a whole album to look forward to.
“‘Henry, come on’ serves as the perfect transition between Rey’s previous album, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, and what’s to come with The Right Person Will Stay.
A lot of people would say this is the same kind of sound we are used to hearing from Rey, but that is exactly why I eat it up every time. Also, this is just a sample of what to expect. ‘Henry, come on’ serves as the perfect transition between Rey’s previous album, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, and what’s to come with The Right Person Will Stay. I am excited to hear the rest of the album, whether it brings completely new sounds or simply classic Lana.
The Right Person Will Stay is currently set for release on May 21.
