News writer, Kirandeep Khosah, discusses Mamdani’s win as New York City mayor.
In October 2024, Zohran Mamdani announced his candidacy for the New York City Mayoral Election. Following a closely contested electoral battle, on November 4th 2025, the people of New York had the chance to vote and elect Mamdani as mayor, marking a historic outcome for the city as they elected the 34-year-old as their new mayor.
Born in Kampala, Uganda to Indian-Muslim parents, Mamdani is not the typical mayoral candidate which has been seen in the past. His South-Asian, Muslim and African-born background makes him the first of this heritage to hold this title. His identity, alongside his progressive policies, has drawn significant worldwide attention to this local election.

Mamdani’s policies, all grounded in socialist values, resonated with the people of New York. His core policies included a freeze on subsidised rent increases, free public buses, and, potentially, one of the most crucial for his campaign: free universal childcare. He stated that these measures would be funded through increased taxes on the super wealthy, which aligned with concerns expressed by many working-class New Yorkers, who are experiencing a continuing cost-of-living crisis.

Mamdani’s youth also makes him one of the youngest mayoral elects in over a century. From meeting his wife on Hinge to having an unconventional ‘rapper era’, Mamdani’s online presence aligned him with the average millennial. This relatable image appealed to younger voters within the millennial and Gen-Z age bracket – the same groups of people who are most inclined to be affected by the unaffordability of renting and childcare expenditures.
While there has been a wide plethora of support for Mamdani within New York and beyond, with many across the States and other western countries celebrating as he undisputedly defeated former governor Cuomo by almost 9% of the vote, his victory has also been met with notable opposition.

In addition to debate over his stance on Palestine among the pro-Zionist populations, Mamdani’s local policy proposals also drew criticism. Opponents in more conservative circles argued that his agenda was too radical, with some characterising it as far-left, going as far as branding them as ‘communist’. These disputes contributed to making Mamdani a widely discussed figure during the campaign, with President Trump appearing to take on the role of his most avid ‘hater’ during Mamdani’s campaign season, as he threatened to cut federal funding to the state of New York, should Mamdani be elected.
In light of these recent results, observers will now focus on how Mamadani addresses disputes during his first tenure as Mayor. While his appointment has drawn disapproval in parts of the United States, polling indicates broad support among New York City residents for his proposed policy agenda. His administration’s performance will be assessed against the expectations established during his campaign.
